BROOKLYN, NY – Thursday afternoon was the opening day of the Ball by the Beach Back-to-School Tournament at Kingsborough Community College and NYCHoops.net was there to check out a NY vs. L.I. Catholic school matchup.
The Holy Cross Knights of Flushing, NY are a bunch of seniors and they play liked it. West Islip’s St. John the Baptist Cougars are a bunch of sophomores and juniors and they too played like it. The result was catastrophic – for the Cougars.
The 68-39 final score was predictable as the Knights consistently moved more and more ahead early and often with good ball movement between seniors Marquise Moore (17 points), Anthony Libroia (9 points) and Eddie Roscigno (8 points). The point spread would probably have been even more but the veteran squad clearly had a bit a ring rust to work off.
The Cougars seemed to have the basic hardware to get the job done as juniors Vinny Abbandola (9 points) and Kevin Jacob (8 points) pierced into Holy Crosses lead from time to time with precision strikes from the perimeter. In addition, Jack Campo (10 points) and Kevin Little (7 points) were also effective.
SJB’s lack of continuity, especially on the defensive end, however, allowed Marriega Clarke (6 points) and other Knights to score off of fast break points to go up, 33-16 at the half.
Early in the second half, Roscigno scored in transition to put the Knights up by twenty and the game went downhill from there for the team from Long Island as the Knight’s lead ballooned to thirty points late in the game.
