6’9″ Marcus Hopper was known as a low post player that played on the perimeter.
Armed with decent range for a big, Hopper would often settle for shots outside the paint. This season, the senior center from Holy Cross HS in Flushing, NY has upgraded his game and people are beginning to take notice.
“Sometimes it takes time with big men,” says head coach Paul Gilvary. “He’s shown a lot of improvement.”
NYCHoops.net got a chance to check out Hopper’s steady improvement during the summer but most recently during a scrimmage against Abraham Lincoln High School. In attendance was Fordham head coach Tom Pecora and the senior displayed his entire arsenal.
During the six sets, Hopper was a beast in the paint, snaring defensive rebounds and scoring off the offensive ones he pulled down. He also showed a heretofore absent post-up game and also was effective with a nice jump hook.
Hoppers improvement has been duly noted by colleges. Coach Gilvary says that Hopper has an offer from UMBC and significant interest from Sienna, Fordham, Howard and BU.
As the regular season is about to get underway, Hopper seems to be peaking at just the right time. With the Holy Cross Knights ranked as #10 by NYCHoops.net, they should make noise in their quest to rule the CHSAA. With the new and improved Marcus Hopper, the Knights odds have been upgraded as well.
